There are 5 possible reasons why an outlier would appear:
- High mineral content in the soil: peat soils, ashes in the soil, volcanic soil (soil type dependent),
- Depth of soil sample is higher than 30cm,
- Very sandy soils (beach sand),
- Soil collected in a forest area (high content of organic matter)
- Sample preparation, main issue would be if the soil was slightly moist, not properly dried.
What to do about it?
- Repeat sample preparation, dry the soil again at 40 degrees Celsius, grind and mill. Make sure the soil is completely dried.
- Check soil origin, where was the soil collected? For instance, soil from uncalibrated areas or volcanic areas can be an issue.
- Check the management practices in the farm, has there been recent manure/compost/lime/fertilizer applications?
