It is crucial to take a representative sample of the silage. This will ensure the results are reliable and accurate, in order to feed the livestock as effectively as possible. Keep in mind that silage sampling should take place 6 weeks after ensiling.

- Large bucket (10-15 liters)
- Pair of latex gloves (optional)
- Long core sampler
How to take a sample from silage?
Ideally use a long core sampler. Sample a number of points on or between diagonals on the surface of the pit (figure 1). Discard the first few centimeters of each core.
Figure 1.
When sampling an open pit, take 10-12 samples in a ‘W’ shape across the face of the clamp (figure 2). Do not take the sample from the face (If it has rained or it’s been sunny, silage sample can be different than what you are currently feeding) neither from areas of spoil and deterioration.
Figure 2.
You can also choose 9 different spots from the clamp (three layers, from left to right, as showed below), take out sample, and mix them well, while performing this, avoid getting samples that hold molds. Follow the same procedure as illustrated above (figure 3).
Figure 3.
Dig into the silage approx. 15-20 cm and take a handful sample from this part. Combine all samples into a large bucket and mix them (around 0.5 kg). After mixing, pour all the sample from the bucket over the black sampling tray/ or sampling cup. Make sure the sample thickness is about 3-5 cm.
When sampling bale silage ensure that the samples are taken from at least 5 bales in the batch (depending on size of the bale pile/batch). Avoid clambering on top of bales, particularly in wet conditions when the risk of slipping and falling is greatest. It is advisable to sample every month regularly depending on the speed of how fast farm gives silage to animals.
How to analyze a feed sample with the scanner?
A sample must be prepared before you can start your scanning. Prepare a sample that is large enough to represent your testing area. The scanner will be delivered with a sample tray and/or a sample cup. We recommend to use the sample tray when scanning feed.
To scan you sample please follow these steps:
- Mix the sample well and fill the sample tray with 4-5 cm of feed material.
- Put the Scanner on top of your sample on the black tray. Make sure the Scanning surface of the sensor head is in contact with your sample.
- Press the ‘Scan’ button on the app (or on the device for 1 second) to start the scanning process. Do not move the scanner while it is scanning.
- Your phone will indicate when to continue to your next sample. In total 5 scans are needed to provide a reliable measurement that represents your sample.
- When the scan is finished, clean the sensor head before proceeding with the second scan.
- Place the scanner on a new location on the black sample tray and press the “scan” button.
- Repeat the process until all 5 required valid scans are finalized. During each scan, make sure the scanning surface of the sensor head is in contact with the sample. Clean the sensor between each scan.
- Lastly, clean the scanner properly before placing it back in the case and follow the process in the app to register a client, a field and generate a report.
