Why Dust Filter Maintenance Is Important
It is important to keep the dust filter of the XRF clean. The XRF generates heat during operation. Dust filters ensure proper airflow to keep the system cool. If the filters are clogged with dust; airflow is reduced, cooling becomes inefficient and the system may overheat.
Risks of Dirty Filters
- System shutdown due to overheating
- Very long cooling time before reuse
- Potential damage to internal electronic circuits within the device
Regular cleaning is essential to maintain performance and prevent downtime.
How often should the filters be cleaned?
Depending on lab the conditions the filters of the XRF should be cleaned every two weeks (dusty lab) or every month (clean lab).
How to Clean the Dust Filters
1. Carefully pull the dust filter cover towards the rear of the instrument.
(Figure 1)
2. Remove the dust filters.
(Figure 2)
3. Clean the filters using either compressed air or a vacuum cleaner. Do NOT wash the filters.
(Figure 3)
4. Check if there is dust collected underneath the dust filter and clean with soft cloth.
(Figure 4)
5. Place the filters back into position
(Figure 5)
6. Reattach the dust filter cover back into the original position.
When to Replace Dust Filters
Dust filters can be cleaned (using compressed air or a vacuum cleaner) for a maximum of 3 times before they need to be replaced. Replace the filter if:
- It remains dirty after cleaning
- It is heavily contaminated with dust
- It shows signs of wear
Filter 1 in the picture below needs to be replaced, Filter 2 is still reusable.
(Figure 6: Example of reusable vs. replaceable filters)
If a filter is completely covered with sandy dust, it must be replaced immediately and cannot be reused! See the picture below for an example.
